Palermo Tour of the Gardens and the Old Harbour - Palermo Tour Guide

From the old city it is easy to walk to Piazza Marina, located in the Kalsa district. The square is bordered by numerous splendid palaces dating back to various eras.

The most important and oldest is Palazzo Chiaramonte or Steri (14th century), the former seat of the Holy Inquisition Court. Today the palace is the seat of the rectorate of the University of Palermo. At the centre of the square is the Garibaldi Garden, a place rich in exotic plants and secular trees, one of which is astonishing to the point of leaving you speechless.

A short distance from the square is the old port of the city, a picturesque place with splendid views. The ancient promenade where the nobility of Palermo used to stroll in the past leads to Villa Giulia, the first public garden of the city. A little further on is the Botanical Garden, home to more than 12,000 different species of plants and covering about 10 hectares.

One of the most famous travellers of the past, J. W. Goethe, wrote enthusiastic words about this place in his famous Italian Journey

Piazza Marina – old harbour – Foro Italico (old promenade) – Botanical garden.
